Today, Formlabs announced two new products at RAPID+TCT 2023 in Chicago: Formlabs Flame Retardant Resin and Formlabs Build Platform 2L.

Flame Retardant Resin allows Formlabs SLA users to easily 3D print flame retardant, heat-resistant, stiff, and creep-resistant parts that will perform well long-term in indoor and industrial environments with high temperatures or ignition sources.

Build Platform 2L brings the same patented Quick Release Technology found in Build Platform 2 for Form 3/3B to Formlabs’ large format SLA 3D printer lineup. Quickly and easily remove parts without tools in seconds.

What is Formlabs Flame Retardant Resin?

Formlabs Flame Retardant Resin (RS-F2-FRGR-01) is a self extinguishing UL94 4-0 Blue Card and FAR 25.853 certified SLA 3D printing material.

Typical applications and use cases for FR Resin include:

Aerospace/automotive Applications

  • Cabin, cockpit, and cargo components that must meet industry flame retardant standards

Consumer Products

  • Battery covers
  • Electronic enclosures

Medical Device Applications

  • Electronic devices that must meet strict standards and guidelines in their testing and construction

F.A.Q.

FR Resin is priced at $249 for 1 KG of resin.

It is compatible with the Form 3, Form 3+, Form 3B, Form 3B+, Form 3L, and Form 3BL.

Wash Settings: Flame Retardant Resin should be washed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) for 10 minutes, or 15 minutes in TPM.

Cure Settings: There are two options for curing FR Resin, depending on the heat deflection temperature (HDT) needed for your part. Cure FR Resin at 70°C for 60 minutes to achieve 94°C HDT and a slightly higher toughness, or cure at 80°C for 120 minutes to achieve a 112°C HDT.

When using FR Resin, shake the resin cartridge vigorously while rotating for at least 2 minutes before starting your print. Not doing so may affect the flame retardancy of your parts.

FR Resin is viscous, so allowing it to automatically dispense into a new tank for the first time before printing will result in a printer timeout error. Prime your printer for printing by doing the following:

  • Form 3: Unscrew the vent cap and pour approximately 350 ml into a new resin tank
  • Form 3L: Unscrew the vent cap and pour one full cartridge of resin into a new Form 3L resin tank

What is Formlabs Build Platform 2L?

Formlabs Build Platform 2L is Formlabs’ next-generation build platform for Form 3L and Form 3BL with patented Quick Release Technology, allowing you to quickly and easily remove parts from the build platform without tools in seconds.

With Build Platform 2L, Form 3L and Form 3BL users can now print their parts directly to the build platform without the need for rafts or supports, depending on your part’s geometry.

Removing Parts from Build Platform 2L

When removing multiple smaller parts from BP 2L, place the build platform on its side and engage the push tabs downwards, flipping the platform over if needed to engage the push tabs on the opposite side.

When removing large, tall, or heavier parts, place the platform flat on the table, then push both tabs on each long side at the same time (push tabs closest to you, then further from you).  Note: You can push one tab at a time to control the release if needed.

F.A.Q.

Build Platform 2L is priced at $599 per build platform.

It is compatible with the Form 3L and Form 3BL.

You can use most Formlabs SLA materials with BP2, except for Durable, Elastic 50A, and Flexible 80A Resin.

If you’re not changing resins for the next print, you can wipe down the top surface with a bit of IPA on a paper towel. The platform doesn’t need to be perfectly clean, but you do want to make sure there aren’t any hard bits of resin left on the print surface before starting your next print.

If you’re switching between resins, or you’re not planning to print with the build platform for the next few weeks, you will need to remove the print surface and clean all surfaces thoroughly. This can be done with a paper towel and IPA by hand, or you can use the Form Wash L by removing the flexible print surface and placing it in the Form Wash L basket, with the build platform body on the forks.
